Before Kaine bit the bullet and just started these steps back in late December, while I was away in the US, we had struggled to visualize how to go about creating steps on our wonky sloped yard. We understood the basic idea that you needed to figure out the rise and run to determine step depth and height, and we knew you had to start at the bottom, but that was harder to put into practice than it should have been because the slopes were not consistent in any direction. The realization that we finally came to (like most things in life), was we just needed to break it into parts, get started, and work it out as we went. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what you need until you’ve taken a few steps toward the goal.
And four months later, our steps were complete! We didn’t think it would take that long, but we are both pretty pleased with how they turned out, along with the progress we are making on the terraced native beds alongside the steps.
